Ideal Body Weight: How to Calculate and What It Really Means

Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimate of the optimal weight for your height. While it provides a useful reference, your actual healthy weight depends on muscle mass, bone density, and body composition.

Common IBW Formulas

  • Devine Formula: Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
  • Robinson Formula: Similar but with slightly different baseline weights
  • Miller Formula: More recent adjustment with different coefficients
  • BMI Method: Ideal weight is the weight that puts you at BMI 21-23

While useful as a guideline, body composition matters more than the number on the scale. Focus on building muscle and reducing body fat percentage.
